Welcome to the AdventHealth Orlando, formerly Florida Hospital, Institutional Review Board. The IRB Orlando is responsible for reviewing all research conducted at AdventHealth Orlando or by AdventHealth Orlando employees/agents for ethical standards, scientific merit, and regulatory compliance.
The purpose of the IRB is to protect the rights and welfare of people who volunteer to participate in human subject research. The IRB is guided by the ethical principles set forth in the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research report, called the Belmont Report
The IRB functions independently but in coordination with other AdventHealth Orlando committees and departments. AdventHealth Orlando IRB members include men and women of diverse backgrounds who are: physicians and PhDs of different disciplines and professions, pharmacists, nurses, clergy, community members, and hospital employees. The IRB staff is available to give guidance and to facilitate review.
The AdventHealth IRB Orlando consists of two panels:
- Panel A, which meets the 2nd Tuesday evening of each month.
- Panel B, which meets the 4th Tuesday evening of each month.
Although the AdventHealth IRB Orlando does not release the names of its members on the website, we provide information on each member's degree, specialty, and affiliation with the institution. These can be found at the bottom of this page and can be downloaded.

Fouad Hajjar, M.D.
Dr. Hajjar has been a member of the AdventHealth IRB Orlando since 1995 and the IRB Chairman since 2004. He is a pediatric oncologist with the Florida Children's Hospital. Dr. Hajjar is a researcher as well as the chairman of the IRB. He can be reached by calling the IRB at 407 303 5581 or through the AdventHealth Orlando IRB mailbox.
Janice joined the AdventHealth Orlando IRB team on July 9, 2012. Janice, who has been in IRB admin since 1999, comes to AdventHealth from the University of Central Florida IRB and prior to UCF she was with the Penn State/Hershey Medical Center IRB. She is a certified IRB Professional. Among her responsibilities: IRB liaison with other institutions and researchers; accreditation preparedness; policies and procedures creation and review; membership contract review; investigator audits; education; review of research; and the daily operations of the IRB Offices. Janice is a member of the IRB.
IRB Operations Specialist
Michelle joined the AdventHealth Orlando IRB in March 2010. Prior to joining AdventHealth IRB, she spent four years working in pre-clinical and clinical pharmaceutical research. She has a Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Outcomes & Policy from the University of Florida and is a Certified IRB Professional. Michelle is also an IRB Voting Member.
IRB Office Coordinator
Samantha joined the AdventHealth Orlando IRB in January 2015. She has twelve years of experience in research including neuroscience, cardiovascular biomechanics, and psychological research. Samantha is also an IRB Voting Member.
Research Support Specialist
Melissa has been with AdventHealth Orlando since 2008, and joined the IRB staff in November 2010. In addition to running the administrative side of the IRB office, Melissa oversees investigator credentialing with the CITI program.
The IRB Administrative Offices Staff is here to help you and to facilitate the review process through the IRB system. Although the IRB staff members have delegated responsibilities, they are experienced with all types of submissions and, as needed, step into each other's roles.
